After a tummy tuck, liposuction or a combination of cosmetic procedures, your attention naturally turns to recovery. Swelling and tightness can make movement feel unfamiliar. You may wonder how long swelling lasts, when you can have massage and whether you will need several treatments.
At Laura's Touch in Hayes, Bromley, we provide specialist Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Post-Op MLD) designed around your procedure, medical history and surgeon's instructions. Here is what to know before booking.
Why does swelling happen after cosmetic surgery?
Surgery causes a controlled injury to body tissues. The body's normal healing response involves inflammation and increased fluid in the area. Liposuction can also temporarily disrupt small lymphatic vessels, while a tummy tuck may involve extensive tissue work and, sometimes, muscle repair.
The lymphatic system helps collect excess fluid from tissues and return it to the circulation. After surgery, this process may be less efficient for a time. Swelling may fluctuate and settle over weeks or months.
Not all swelling should be treated with massage. A sudden increase in swelling, a new fluid-filled pocket or worsening pain needs medical assessment.
What is Post-Op Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Post-op lymphatic drainage is a specialised, gentle form of massage intended to encourage fluid movement without placing unnecessary pressure on healing tissues. Rather than using vigorous kneading or deep-tissue techniques, a trained therapist works with light, precise and rhythmic movements, adapting the treatment to the stage of recovery.
A recent systematic review suggests MLD can reduce swelling after certain cosmetic procedures, although research on pain, fibrosis and long-term outcomes is less consistent. It is best considered supportive care, not a guarantee of faster healing or a replacement for your surgeon's aftercare plan.
When can you start after a tummy tuck or liposuction?
The correct starting point depends on your operation, your surgeon's instructions, your wounds and whether any complications have occurred. Some clients receive clearance within a few days; others need longer. At Laura's Touch, we ask clients to obtain surgeon approval and ensure any surgical drains have been removed where applicable before beginning treatment.
If your surgery includes extensive liposuction, abdominal repair, breast surgery or fat transfer, please explain this when enquiring. The area treated, pressure used and positioning may need to be modified. We never treat directly over unhealed wounds or ignore medical restrictions.
How many sessions might you need?
One massage cannot be expected to resolve every stage of post-operative swelling. Many clients are advised to consider regular sessions during the early recovery period, sometimes two or three appointments a week initially, followed by less frequent visits as swelling settles.
A course of around ten sessions is often discussed at Laura's Touch, but it is not a fixed medical requirement or a promise that ten will be enough. Some people need fewer appointments; others benefit from longer-term support, especially after multiple procedures. Your response, surgeon's advice and budget should guide the plan.
We also offer block-booking options for clients who prefer to plan their appointments in advance.
Can MLD prevent seromas or fibrosis?
A seroma is a collection of fluid that may develop after surgery. Fibrosis refers to scar-related firmness or changes in tissue texture. These concerns are often discussed alongside post-surgery massage, but it is important not to overstate what MLD can achieve.
Gentle treatment may help manage some swelling, but there is not sufficient evidence to promise that it will prevent a seroma, eliminate fibrosis or protect cosmetic results. Suspected seromas require assessment by your surgical team. Laura's Touch does not drain fluid collections with needles. Any scar or tissue-focused work must also wait until it is appropriate for your stage of healing.
Why isn't Brazilian MLD suitable immediately after surgery?
Brazilian MLD and Post-Op MLD have different purposes. Brazilian Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses more dynamic, sculpting-focused techniques for clients seeking a general wellness treatment. Newly operated tissue needs a much gentler and more carefully adapted approach.
If you are recovering from a tummy tuck, 360 liposuction, a BBL or breast surgery, choose the dedicated Post-Op MLD service rather than Brazilian lymphatic massage. Your safety and healing take priority over visible contouring.
What else supports recovery?
MLD is only one part of post-operative aftercare. Follow your surgeon's advice about compression garments, wound care, activity restrictions, nutrition, hydration and gentle walking. Do not change garment pressure or stop prescribed measures because a massage makes you feel better.
Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, increasing redness, wound discharge, rapidly worsening pain or unusual swelling. New one-sided calf swelling needs urgent assessment; chest pain or sudden breathlessness requires emergency help. Massage should never delay medical attention.
